Two New Online Services Assist Retirees in Virginia
 In Virginia, two
systems are among new web-based assistance for retirees and the disabled.
The Virginia Assistive Technology System focuses attention on simple ways to
help people with mobility problems, especially aging adults.
This year, VATS will be holding Real World Day at Radford University Nov. 7.
Weyer’s expecting around 27 exhibitors and agencies, plus financial and
employment-related sessions for aging adults and adults with mobility problems.
All seniors are invited to attend the programs and try out simple “gadgets and
gizmos” that can help with everyday chores such as opening a jar or can of food.

SeniorNavigator.com, based in Richmond and launched in 2001 and the only
nonprofit service of its kind in the country, it lists more than 18,000
organizations in a database about health care, hospitals, retirement, senior
services and community health education events in Virginia. The site also offers
Viva, a club for adults over 50, and weekly featured articles about aging.
“It’s a one-stop shop for all of the resources for seniors and those taking care
of them,” says Scott Walker, communications director for SeniorNavigator.com.
Problems using the Internet? Carilion is the sponsor for this region.
The 121 sites across Virginia include seven in Southwestern Virginia, including
one in Roanoke’s Tanglewood Mall.
