where can a curious traveler visit a historic relic, savor a gourmet meal and taste some of the best wine produced in the United States?  The answer lies in Virginia's verdant piedmont, about 20 miles northeast of Charlottesville.  Barboursville Vineyard and Winery offers cuisine and libations with an Italian accent and an opportunity to explore historic relics ensconced among the vineyards.

The centerpiece of the 900-acre Barboursville estate is the remnant of the home of former Virginia Governor James Barbour, who served from 1811 until 1814.  He is credited with authoring Virginia's stringent anti-dueling law and creating "The General Literary Fund of Virginia" to enable the education of poverty-stricken children. 

While governor, Barbour enlisted the help of his friend Thomas Jefferson to design a governor's mansion.  Jefferson drew inspiration for his designs from....
