Mountain Homes
is a quarterly, full-color
magazine celebrating the best of upscale living in the Southern mountain … the homes, the events, the art, the style, the food, and the cities and
towns that people today are increasingly seeking out for retirement or as an
escape from big city living.
Our territory extends from the
Shenandoah Valley of Virginia down into northern Georgia and includes all
territory in the mountain regions of Virginia, North Carolina, South
Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia.
MAIN PIECES (750 – 2,000 WORDS)
Destinations
Everything there is to tell about a great Southern mountain town, city or
locale. The history, current economic status, temperature, taxes,
recreational facilities, “Don’t-Miss” attractions, educational and medical
facilities, annual events, best places to eat, even new communities. A
profile so complete our readers can decide if this is the sort of place they
would be interested in as a permanent or second home location.
Food and Wine
We take our readers to a variety of locations where Southern vintners are
establishing a new tradition with regional wines that are becoming
increasingly desirable with wine lovers everywhere. We interview the owners
or operators, tour the facility, tell what’s available on site as to
restaurants or tasting rooms, and give a brief accounting of the many types
of wines and their best points.
In the food category, we
put the accent on the chef, his or her training, personal favorites and
small glimpses into his private life, much like a personality profile. We
also describe the restaurant where he works, some of the main dishes he
creates and his expert tips for at-home cooking success.
Mountain Style
Much of the furniture and home accents found in today’s mountain homes is
distinctive for its construction, use of solid woods and leathers, and
general themes. These are often showcased as part of a shopping or interior
design section. We would be interested in finding new trends and sources
for unique products.
Homes and Gardens
These are the heart of Mountain Homes. We search out wonderful
homes, usually large and impressive, but sometime small and heavy on charm,
and tell the story of the people who live there – often those who have
chosen to relocate to the mountains. In this section, we often also focus on
small (or sometimes large) stories about log homes, a staple in the mountain
communities that has become increasingly sophisticated. As a new feature of
the magazine and at readers’ requests, we include a Builder’s Corner with
tips on mountain construction and when possible, blue prints of the home. Gardens are also spotlighted, as in columns with helpful hints for the home
horticulturist, or when available, an outstanding example of mountain garden
layout.
General Articles
Anything that is well
researched, well written and tied to the Southern mountains, the second-home
and retirement demographic trends, and the area’s upscale lifestyle would
get strong consideration. Among the topics, gifted men and women who are
creating highly desirable art and crafts, the rare developers and architects
who have contributed to the new sophistication of mountain communities and
the discovery of exceptional places and things, from spas to “bests” in the
region.
