The dream of living in the mountains means different things to different people. Some want magnificent views from a custom home they’ve built surrounded by lush acres. Others want more socialization, and the “lock-and-leave” convenience of condo ownership. Sometimes homeowners can have the best of both.

Building a home in the mountains is a dream for many.

But there can be delays and headaches involved with selecting the right property, going through the building process and dealing with the constant maintenance home ownership demands. Because of this, developers are seeing renewed interest in condominium ownership

“Homes take a lot of work,” says Mike Toohey, director of development for the Maggie Valley Club in Maggie Valley, N.C., “and people who are vacationing or retired don’t want to work.” Increasingly, he says, a condo presents a “lock-and-leave” maintenance-free option
