2008 Best of the Mountains Awards
From the Winter 2008 Issue

Research/Writing by Jessica Wright, Sandra Kelly, Jeff Wood, David Witkege, Mary Ann Johnson and Norma Lugar
For the fourth year, we at Mountain Homes are honoring the stars in our Southern mountains with special awards for outstanding development of both communities and towns.

It’s no easy job.

As Mountain Homes has grown, so have the special places in our coverage area.

Now with more than 300 communities between our borders of Maryland and Alabama, there is a bounty of choices for every taste and need. Nevertheless, guided by information from our writers, staff members, architects and editors, we have created our list of the best of the best.

No matter what your interest, you’ll find something here to guide you in your personal quest for a dream mountain home. Read. Enjoy. And good hunting!

Residents enjoy a year-round camp experience at The Lodges at Eagles Nest, complete with not only stunning cabins and lodges, but fun outdoor activities for all ages.
The Lodges at Eagles Nest, Banner Elk, N.C.– A non-traditional community whose developer John Turchin conceived of the “twist” of giving residents a chance to relive summer camp in a luxury setting. To that end, he bypassed golf and offers residents a different experience with such fun things as a toy barn, amphitheater, nature and riding trails, and ropes course. Also part of the multi-generational atmosphere: hiking, biking, art activities and an on-site library. The community encompasses 1,350 acres and plans four- to 10-acre sites for lodges, and two- to four- acre sites for cabin homes. 828-898-8965; eaglesnestbe.com.

Cielo Falls, Boone N.C. – Created as a quiet space built around nature exploration, a “green” philosophy and adventure, it spans 1,100 acres with a limited number of home sites positioned along the ridgelines. The community’s nine miles of low-impact walking and hiking trails wind through an area of waterfalls, swimming holes, stargazing outposts and trout streams managed by Trout Headwaters, Inc. The homes, built by Heritage Log Homes, feature hand-hewn details, internet-cable, and fire and security alarms. 512-930-5558, 866-992-4356; cielofalls.com.
