Tzadi Turrou began working with clay in 1974 while living in Cambridge, MA, making mostly functional items. He moved to Tucson several years later and turned his attention to tiles as a clay art at the suggestion of a friend who owned a tile shop. First in Arizona and later in Colorado he worked with an American Indian artist to create and build custom tile installations.
Upon moving to North Carolina, he sold tiles to The Gallery of the Mountains inside the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. The Inn subsequently hired him to do a numbered series of tiles using the terra cotta roof tiles which were being replaced after 87 years. He also found a niche within the Arts & Crafts community to make tiles in that style and was asked to participate in the annual Arts & Crafts Conference which is held at the Inn.
